Brain Fitness Games Improve Memory

Good

Good News for Grandpa

Now your kids have one up on you. You know how you say their brains will turn to mush from so many computer games?  That’s not necessarily true anymore.

According to the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry, elderly adults who play brain fitness games that exercise memory show improvements in their memory over people who do not play games.

Grow Your Own Blueberries

We all know how healthy blueberries are for us.  The Mayo Clinic says that “Blueberries are a rich source of plant compounds (phytonutrients). As with cranberries, phytonutrients in blueberries may help prevent urinary tract infections. Blueberries may also improve short-term memory and promote healthy aging. Blueberries are also a low-calorie source of fiber and vitamin C — 1 cup of fresh blueberries has 84 calories, 3.6 grams of fiber and 14 mg of vitamin C.” Blueberries have cognitive-boosting effects.  Blueberries are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and are rich in polyphenols (antioxidants).

Vitamin D: Why You Need the “Sunshine Vitamin”

We Need Vitamin D

We Need Vitamin D

Stronger bones, a better immune system, protection from some cancers, lower blood pressure, clearer skin, and a healthier brain. These are just a few of the apparent benefits of the strangest of vitamins—vitamin D. Unlike all other vitamins, vitamin D is made by our bodies, but it requires sunshine.

The problem is, we’re just not getting as much sun as we used to or enough to make the vitamin D our bodies need. We spend too much time indoors, and when we do go outdoors, we’re using sunblock, which blocks the ultraviolet rays that create vitamin D.

Greek Salads

Authentic Greek Salad

The Greek Salad is the common component of a Greek meal.  It is made with wedges of tomatoes, sliced (and, typically, peeled,) cucumber, green bell peppers, red onion, sliced or cubed feta cheese, and kalamata olives, typically seasoned with salt, pepper and dried oregano, and dressed with olive oil.  Here is an example of your basic Greek Salad:

Touch Up Wood Baseboards: April’s Fix-It-Up Project

Trade Secret Scratch Remover

Trade Secret Scratch Remover

It’s been awhile since I’ve been truly amazed by a product but that’s exactly what happened with this month’s fix-it-up project.  I have stained wood baseboards and doors throughout my house.  Over the years, they’ve become scratched from all sorts of things – the vacuum, an unruly dog guest, moving furniture, and assorted mystery scratches – to the point of cringing when you look at them.

I thought I was going to have to re-stain the wood in the entire house, which is why I put off this project for so long. Painting them never seemed an option since it would cost so much money and work to paint all the baseboards in the entire house.  I have neither the money or the time.

Planting a Successful Garden

Gardening with Love

Gardening with Love

Planting a successful garden can be rewarding whether your goal is to add beauty to your yard with flowers and plants or create a bountiful crop of veggies and fruits for your family to enjoy.

Start with your soil.  Check with your local nursery for a soil sample which will tell you what nutrients your soil is missing. Loosen the soil, remove any rocks before adding organic material such as; compost, peat moss or manure.

Easy Homemade Mayonnaise Using Egg Substitute

Mayonnaise Using Egg Beaters

This easy blender recipe for mayonnaise uses Egg Beaters, or any other commercial egg substitute.  For even more money savings, use our recipe to first make your own Homemade Egg Beaters.  Mixed with a few herbs, this is very tasty on grilled salmon. Spread a layer on before grilling; it forms a nice tangy crust, then use it as a dip after grilling.
