Basic Focaccia

Try Making a Foccacia Pizza

This bread is one of our favorites.  We have used it as the foundation for our pizzas, sandwiches, or just to eat with a warm bowl of soup.  You can flavor it up with any type of herb or seasonings as well as different types of cheeses.  Our favorite seasoning is rosemary. Flavor it up with garlic butter to go with your Italian dishes, or top it with olives and red onions to go with a Greek salad.

Basic Focaccia

  • 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 2/3 cups warm water
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 ½ Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 package rapid-rise yeast
  • ½ cup grated cheese (use your favorites)
  • 1 tsp. oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Coat your mixing bowl with some of the olive oil.  If you have some of the herb infused oil, use that.  Combine your flour, sugar, oregano, salt and the package of yeast.  Add the 1 2/3 cups warm water and mix well.  The dough will feel sticky.  Cover the mixture with plastic wrap and let rise for 1 -2 hours.

On a baking sheet lined with wax paper and lightly coated with olive oil, spread out the dough.  Let rise for another hour.  Cover the top with cheese, herbs and/or vegetables, use your imagination.  Bake in the oven at 450 degrees for 15 – 20 minutes.  I think you will love this versatile recipe.
