Print Friendly
Useful Tool for Around the House

Our homes are in constant need of repair. The maintenance increases with the age of the home. Most of us make those repairs ourselves to save money. Hiring a handyman can be expensive. With the right tools we can do it ourselves. Keep the following tools in your arsenal.

  • Claw hammer for driving or removing nails and prying up wood
  • Nail set to drive nails below the wood surface
  • Screwdrivers (one flathead and one phillips) for driving or removing screws
  • Adjustable wrench to tighten and loosen nuts and bolts
  • Slip-joint pliers for gripping and turning
  • Needle-nose pliers for gripping and turning in confined spaces
  • Portable electric drill and bits for drilling holes and driving or removing screws
  • Crosscut saw for cutting wood
  • Hack saw for cutting metal
  • Plane for trimming wood
  • Wood chisel for shaping wood
  • Utility knife for cutting thin wood, plastic, carpet, linoleum, etc.
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • C-clamps in different sizes to help hold items in place to cut, glue, etc.
  • Hand or electric staple gun for working with furniture or fabrics
  • Safety goggles
  • Gloves
  • Assortment of nails and screws
  • Sandpaper with an assortment of grits

Collect your tools as you need them. Keep them in a tool box or bin in your garage protected from water so they won’t rust. When you purchase nails and screw for a project, you usually have some leftover. Keep them organized in small bins or small jars for your next project. Take care of your tools and you will have them for many projects.
