Buying Frozen Fish Better for the Environment

Flash frozen

Here’s a new rule for environmentally friendly responsible eating of your favorite fish.

We all know that eating fish is good for us for the wealth of omega-3 fatty acids and fish oil, but we’ve been led to believe that fresh and organic is also the way to go for the health of the environment.

But new studies show that purchasing frozen salmon over fresh is 2 times better for the environment.  Why?  Fresh fish is flown by air to its destination, putting large amounts of pollutants in the air.  Frozen fish can be moved by container ship, train, or truck, all of which putter fewer emissions in the air than airplanes.

The difference in carbon emissions even outweighs the benefits of buying organic.  Frozen wild Alaskan salmon which has been flash frozen upon being caught retains its freshness and original levels of heart-healthy omega-3s.
