A Simple, Savvy Staycation

Staycation

Staycation

Guest post by Regina:

Don’t have the time or money to take a week or even a weekend to fly away to some exotic place? Try a staycation. A staycation is a vacation you take at home.

When I was a teenager I lived in what you could call a concrete jungle. People didn’t pull the weeds because at least they were green! I have wonderful memories of 10-minute bus rides to one of the city parks. The trees were old and wise, and there were rolling hills and an area with water where small children would sail their little boats. Just like what you’d see in a movie or good dream.

Celebrating Memorial Day

Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep

Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday (formerly known as Decoration Day) which is observed on the last Monday in May.  This day commemorates U.S. men and women who have died serving our country as well as fallen police and firefighters.

You and your family can observe the day by visiting and leaving flowers on the graves of those who have fought for our safety and freedom; fly your American Flag at half-staff until noon; and by pausing at 3 p.m. (National Moment of Remembrance) to remember what this day means to us.

All-inclusive Resorts

Mexico All-inclusive Resort

Mexico All-inclusive Resort

Geri and I, plus two other close friends, traveled to Acapulco a couple years ago.  It was fun to get away from the husbands, kids, work, and the daily house chores, and spend a little “girl” time together.

We stayed at an all-inclusive resort, meaning you pay one price for the hotel, food, basic cocktails, and other amenities. This is much like a cruise where most everything is included in one price. But how exactly does it work, and is it always the best deal?

Cell Phone and Texting Laws

State Laws

State Laws

Updated March 2010:

State cell phone and texting while driving law highlights include:

  • Handheld Cell Phones: 6 states (Calif., Conn., N.J., N.Y., Ore. and Wash.), D.C. and the Virgin Islands prohibit all drivers from using handheld cell phones while driving.
    • Except for Washington, these laws are primary enforcement—an officer may cite a driver for using a handheld cell phone without any other traffic offense taking place.

Smart and Simple Travel Tips

Write Your Notes on Postcards

Write Your Notes on Postcards

Here are some of the better travel tips that I’ve run across.

  1. Before you go camping and plan to build a fire, collect the lint from your dryer in a Ziploc to use as a starter.  It almost weightless, ignites right away, and saves you from gathering kindling.
  2. If you love to journal when you travel, but don’t want to carry a book, buy postcards every day and right notes on the back.  When you get home, transfer the notes to your scrapbook.
