399 Borders Book Stores Closing

All 399 Borders book stores are closing, for good this time. Struggling with dropping sales, competition from eReaders and Amazon, and bankruptcy, the 2nd largest book chain in America has decided to close its doors. Some stores may begin liquidation as early as the end of this week depending on the location, but Borders Group said Tuesday all stores across the country will close by the end of September.

I always enjoyed going into Borders to browse the many titles, peek at the gifts, and walk the aisles of the calendars and magazine. But I suppose that I was part of their demise. I usually buy my books from Costco (cheaper) or Amazon (convenient and quick), or borrow from my friends. So I must take some of the guilt upon myself.

I suspected something was up when I went to return an unused gift item that I had just purchased the day before. I had the receipt, it was obviously unused, and yet the clerk wanted to only give me store credit instead of returning my money to my bank card. After arguing with the manager, they finally returned my money.

Plus, I had just given a Borders gift card to a friend for her birthday. So if you have any of these yourself, be sure to quickly cash in your gift cards before the stores close. Once they do, you’re just out of luck.

However, all area stores will begin liquidation of their goods, so some great deals can be had. Be a smart shopper and grab some great deals for holiday and birthday presents.

Consider the Many Options For Renting a Movie

If you are a movie nut like I am, you can’t go a week without enjoying a new release or an old favorite. However, when our neighborhood Blockbuster closed their doors, we were left to decide how we would rent movies. Consider the following options:

REDBOX
Redbox kiosks are popping up all over and becoming quite popular with $1.00 per day movie rentals ($1.50 for Blu-ray). From the comfort of your own computer, you can reserve a movie online to pick up at your nearest kiosk. If the movie you are looking for is not available at your nearest kiosk, Redbox will let you know where to find it.

You have until 9:00 p.m. the next day to return the movie, otherwise if late you are charged $1.00 per day. Returning a movie is made easy—you simply return your movie to ANY Redbox, ANYWHERE! If you rent often, then you may want to consider some of the other more cost effective options.

NETFLIX

Netflix is probably one of the more popular means of renting movies. This mail-in service allows you to rent unlimited movies, one at a time or stream movies into your home. There is never a late fee and you can return movies in a pre-paid mail-in envelope which Netflix provides you. You can choose from literally thousands of movies and television programs.

Checkout their offers online at Netflix.com or call their 24-hour customer service at 1-866-636-3076 for more information and current offers.

BLOCKBUSTER

Blockbuster has modeled its mail-in program after Netflix, with the exception that Blockbuster allows you store visits as well as mail-in. However, with many of their stores closing it may not be your best and most cost effective choice. Checkout their offers online at Blockbuster.com.

For other options check out your cable or satellite service such as Pay-per-view and on-demand. They can be more costly, but for many more convenient. If you like free, checkout Hulu online. The selections are limited, but did I mention that it was FREE!

I love the simple pleasure of receiving a magazine in the mail and finding a quiet moment to enjoy it. However, my magazine subscriptions were one of the first things I cut out of my budget to save money. After perusing through one of my magazines, I ran across the word FREE. OK, you have my attention now. I love free stuff. I have been known to stand in line for free stuff. I don’t think I am alone. So I ripped out the page and set it aside to check out what free stuff awaits me.

A week later I had the time to visit P&G Everyday Solutions and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this website. Yes there are free samples and online coupons to download. There are sweepstakes to enter and promotions to sign up for. But I also found a lot of helpful information. I enjoyed their 7-day meal planner. They have articles, tips and recommendations with a wide range of topics.
