Easy, Inexpensive Low-Sugar Spaghetti Sauce

Print Friendly

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

I quit buying bottled spaghetti sauce.  I’m eating foods with low sugar and healthy ingredients.  The less expensive sauce brands are loaded with sugar and unrecognizable ingredients.  The more organic, healthy ones are expensive.  So I make my own with this quick, inexpensive recipe.  It takes only minutes to make and saves money. And it has only healthy ingredients that I add myself.

To save even more money, I buy my cans of tomatoes in bulk at Costco, especially when they have a Buy-One-Get-One Free coupon.

Easy and Delicious Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Start with one can of each, any brand desired:

  1. one small can tomato paste
  2. one 15 oz can crushed or chopped tomatoes
  3. one ~15 oz can tomato sauce

Open each can and pour into a saucepan.  Fill the tomato paste can about 1/2 way with water, and stir to rinse the remaining contents of the can.  Pour this water into the sauce can, stir and rinse.  Pour this water into the chopped tomato can.  Stir, rinse, and pour into saucepan.

Add any of the following ingredients that you wish.  Be creative, and as generous or stingy as you like:

  1. herbs such as basil, thyme, sage, parsley, rosemary
  2. fresh herbs such as those above
  3. fresh or bottled garlic
  4. salt and pepper
  5. red wine
  6. olive oil

Now you can add any other desired ingredients, such as:

  1. cooked vegetables like onion, peppers, mushrooms, asparagus, or spinach (no need to cook spinach beforehand)
  2. cooked meats such as ground beef, chicken, or bison
  3. meatballs

Let simmer about 10 minutes on medium heat, stirring occasionally.  In the meantime, cook your pasta according to package directions.  Both sauce and pasta will be done about the same time.  Top with freshly grated Parmesan cheese, and you’re in for a treat! Enjoy!

  1. Thank you, very useful. I wasnt really a big fan of Spinach for many years (ok, that’s a total lie, I hated the stuff), but after shacking up with a vegan I kind of had to put up with it, and have slowly come to totally love the stuff. Spinach curry is undoubtedly my absolute favouritest! I even found an entire spinach recipes website which is my new favourite site now, you should take a look!
