Authentic Greek Salad

The Greek Salad is the common component of a Greek meal.  It is made with wedges of tomatoes, sliced (and, typically, peeled,) cucumber, green bell peppers, red onion, sliced or cubed feta cheese, and kalamata olives, typically seasoned with salt, pepper and dried oregano, and dressed with olive oil.  Here is an example of your basic Greek Salad:

Greek Salad

  • 2 large ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 large cucumber, peeled and diced
  • 1 small purple onion, thinly sliced
  • ¾ cup pitted green olives
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 4 oz. feta cheese, crumbled
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Common additions include the pickled leaves, buds or berries of capers, vinegar, lemon juice, chopped parsley and oil packed sun dried tomatoes.  Many add the ingredients to a bed of romaine lettuce. Enjoy!
