Homemade Refill for Reed Diffusers

Make your Own Diffuser Refill

Make your Own Diffuser Refill

Christmas is over; the presents unwrapped. The holiday bills will soon begin to show their not-so-friendly faces in our mailboxes. So it’s time once again to get back to basics.

Many of you received a reed diffuser for the holidays. You know the kind I’m talking about, with the little sticks coming out of a jar of perfumed liquid. Bath & Body Works sells various kinds, as well as Kohls and most other department stores. These diffusers are popular because they give off a nice subtle scent without being overpowering.

I had one for about a month before the liquid evaporated. Then what? Most stores want you to buy a refill, or replace yours with a new one, but we’ll show you how to make your own homemade version. It’s so simple and inexpensive.

Whether you use oil or vodka, place your diffuser away from a flame just in case it spills.

Homemade Reed Diffuser Refill

20 drops of essential oil – any scent that you prefer. Lavender, citrus, or rose is nice.
120 proof vodka – most vodkas are 120 proof, clear, and odorless ~or~ clear baby oil (unscented)

  1. Add the 20 drops of essential oil to your diffuser bottle.
  2. Fill the rest of the bottle with 120 proof vodka or baby oil.
  3. Mix.
  4. Add reeds. It may be necessary to replace your reeds periodically. Bamboo skewer sticks like the ones for grilling can be used as a substitute.
