What if just by making one change in your habits, you could double your weight loss? It may sound too good to be true, but many experts say that the simple act of keeping a food diary can encourage you to eat fewer calories — and thus lose weight.

Many studies show that the simple act of keeping a food diary improves your effort to lose weight, and in fact can double your weight loss.

But how can something so simple be so effective?

We so often have mindless eating, especially while watching TV or working on the computer. It’s not too hard to eat a half bag (or even the whole bag) of chips when we’re not paying attention to our habits. Being accountable by writing things down helps up be more aware.

Stress is another dangerous way we tend to overeat. Or boredom. Even cooking and snacking as you cook can lead to our downfall. But if you have to write down those extra bites of food, you’ll tend to curtail or even stop that snacking.

It’ll also help you identify trigger foods, habitual eating patterns, or food intolerances that can sabotage your efforts.
