Planting a Successful Garden

Planting a successful garden can be rewarding whether your goal is to add beauty to your yard with flowers and plants or create a bountiful crop of veggies and fruits for your family to enjoy.
Start with your soil. Check with your local nursery for a soil sample which will tell you what nutrients your soil is missing. Loosen the soil, remove any rocks before adding organic material such as; compost, peat moss or manure.
Your local nursery is a great place to start with questions about when to plant, where to plant and any special needs your plants may need. Purchase plants and seeds that you know will do well in your area.
After planting, lay approximately 4 inches of mulch to help deter the growth of weeds. It is important to remove weeds when they pop up because they can steal nutrients and water from your plants
Worms and ladybugs are welcome. Adding compost or manure to your garden will encourage them to stick around. Watch out for the pests that are not welcome
Eggshells are a good source of calcium and can benefit your vegetable gardens. Crush the shells and spread them around your plants.
Plants love water, but too much can be detrimental. Keep your plants moist, but not wet. It is preferable to water in the morning. A good rule is 1 inch of water per week. Take into account how much rain you have received.
Enjoy your garden!
