Reuse Your Old Maps with This Great Craft

I love reading maps. I love collecting maps. And don’t you hate recycling those beautiful maps from the National Geographic Magazine? Here’s a simple craft project that would make a perfect craft for a Scout troop or to give to Dad for Father’s Day. They’d also make a cute bon voyage gift to give to your traveling friends as they hit the road in their RV.
Use your maps, whether it be from a fun vacation or from your favorite magazine to make simple, cost efficient drink coasters. You’ll be reminded of that fun trip every time you use them.
Materials
- Maps
- Cutting mat or board
- Round cork coasters (available at local craft store)
- Craft knife
- Foam paintbrush
- Glue sealant (Mod Podge)
- First, choose your map (this may be the most difficult part). For a set, it may be nice to make a set all from one map, or for fun, mix it up with different locations and overseas excursions. Pick interesting parts of the map, or areas that you actually visited.
- Place map on cutting surface, printed side down, and place coaster on top.
- Holding tightly, cut out circles with craft knife. (for young children, have a parent do this part)
- Apply glue to one side of coaster using foam brush, covering completely.
- Place on back of map circle, smoothing out wrinkles and bubbles.
- Brush more sealant on top and sides of coaster, keeping it thin this time.
- Let dry. Repeat with other coasters.
