Scheduling your weekly chores doesn’t work for everyone. I got into the habit while working outside the home and found that it worked well for me. It was the only way I was able to stay on top of all my weekly responsibilities. It kept me structured and organized. Of course, my favorite part was checking things off my list as I completed them. My one regret is that I never learned to delegate! I always thought I could do a better job and much more quickly than anyone else. What was I thinking! Don’t make that mistake—it’s not too late to start delegating.

It was important for me to have everything done so that I could enjoy the weekend with my family. For me, it was worth the extra push during the week. Using a checklist helped me prioritize my days. Monday is the day I clean the toilets, tubs, and sinks. This chore is so much easier if kept up weekly. I keep a container of baby wipes (add your favorite cleaner) in each bathroom to clean with. After having one of our bathtubs refinished, I was told to use the magic erasers and Dawn liquid dish soap to clean the tubs—works great on soap scum. They both work better than anything I have used before and without the toxic and expensive products, I had been using.

Laundry is one of those chores that never seem to go away. I much prefer to stay on top of it and not let it get out of hand. Every morning while preparing breakfast, I throw a load in. Everyone in my house knows that if it is not in the dirty clothes by Friday, it will have to wait until Monday. Don’t let the clothes sit in the dryer otherwise they end up with more wrinkles that need your attention. Pull them from the dryer and immediately hang them up.

Make a list of all your weekly responsibilities and spread them out during the week. Delegate as many as you can to family members according to their ages and capabilities. Give them the same opportunity to mark their accomplishments off of a list. Tackle large projects a little bit at a time. And by all means don’t forget to schedule a time for a good book or a family outing or lunch with friends. I believe the better organized we are, the more time we find to enjoy our lives.
