Sweet! Today is June 3, 2011; National Doughnut Day! And that means a sweet, free deal for you and me.  Skip the diet for today and indulge in a hot, sugary, wonderful goody.

The “holiday” honors the Salvation Army “doughgirls” who handed out the sweet treats to soldiers on the front lines during World War I. According to the Home Front Encyclopedia, the “Sallies,” as the volunteers were also known, baked between 2,500 and 9,000 doughnuts a day for the troops. The program was so successful that it was brought back during World War II, and in 1938, the Chicago Salvation Army instituted National Doughnut Day to laud the men and women of World War I and to raise money for the organization’s operating costs.
