We are becoming increasingly aware that so many of the cleaners we use in our homes on a daily basis are not good for our health or the environment. We have been brainwashed over the years to believe that we can’t get the job done without these harsh, chemically-laden products. And yet so many of us continue using them because we don’t have an alternative. We do now! Please visit us every Wednesday for tips on healthier alternatives to our everyday cleaning needs. Today’s tip:
Oven cleaners have a bad rap for good reason, read the warning label. They are harmful if swallowed, fumes are toxic and irritating to skin, eyes, and lungs. You are advised to wear gloves to prevent serious burns to your skin. The contents are under pressure AND flammable. This need not be the norm in our homes anymore.
Try making a thick paste of baking soda and water. With a scrubber run the paste all around the inside of a warm (not hot) oven. Sprinkle dry baking soda around the bottom of the oven and then spray it lightly with water–let it sit overnight. The next day, use a wet rag to wipe up what is left. If your oven has been abused and ignored for a while, try adding a little vinegar to the water and baking soda mixture with a little extra elbow grease. No more fumes or health risks to contend with. Give it a try and let us know what you think!
