An antioxidant is a chemical compound or substance that inhibits oxidation. Certain vitamins, such as vitamin E, are antioxidants and may protect body cells from damage caused by the oxidative effects of free radicals.  Oxidation occurs when elements or materials are exposed to free radicals in the environment.

A free-radical is an atom or group of atoms that has at least one unpaired electron and is therefore unstable and highly reactive. Free radicals can damage cells and are believed to accelerate the progression of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and age-related diseases. Some of the most antioxidant-rich foods are as follows:

  • Blackberries
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Blueberries
  • Cranberries
  • Walnuts
  • Artichokes
  • Broccoli
  • Tomatoes
  • Garlic
  • Spinach
  • Red grapes
  • Tea
